Faith is sometimes expressed in word, in prayer and in song. Sometimes, it is found in a well-timed pass to a sprinting halfback.
A growing number of Christians understand that sports can be a powerful tool for character development and it can also be a gateway to a deeper exploration of faith.
YFC runs a variety of sports and recreation programs for youth across the city. You can open up a spiritual conversation on a hike much easier than you can get an unchurched teenager to walk into a Bible study or a worship service. It’s not threatening.
For many teenagers, YFC’s recreational programs are as close as they have been to a church. We like the idea of somebody who is unchurched getting involved on a YFC sports team, having a good experience and thinking ‘maybe Christians aren’t all that bad.’
Tempers can fly. Young people can get really competitive and aggressive. But the competition fosters relationships between players and provides opportunities for a caring adult to mentor the teenager. One of the best ways we develop relationships with young people is by doing things together like playing football. It is this type of emotional support that can lead to faith formation.
Sports and spirituality are natural partners. There are parallels everywhere between faith and sports. Commitment, training, teamwork - there are a million ways you can take sports and make the connection to spiritual fitness.
At YFC, we build in a faith component — often as simple as a short devotional or opening prayer. We don’t want to be just another rec league. We have a higher purpose, sometimes it leads to an opportunity to share the Gospel. Sometimes it leads to an opportunity to invite them to open their lives to Jesus Christ.
